The meeting of the network's Design Special Interest Group was represented by participants from the network lead at the University of Lapland, as well as the Umeå Institute of Design (Umeå University), Hokkaido University, Sapporo City University, Murmansk State Humanities University, and Lahti Business Region. The seminar featured a series of presentations around the theme, of how design in the Arctic can be can be used to directly improve the lives of people in the region.

The ASAD network aims to identify and share contemporary and innovative practices in teaching, learning, research and knowledge exchange in the fields of arts, design and visual culture education. The network consists of art and design art education universities in the circumpolar area. Combining traditional knowledge with modern academic knowledge cultures at northern academic institutions represents an opportunity unique to the Arctic.
