Vaartoe, Sweden's only Centre for Sami research, coordinates and initiates research in and on Sápmi, the Sami country, focusing on the cultures, societies, histories and languages of Sami and other Indigenous peoples. Vaartoe is a hub for PhD students and researchers from different disciplines at Umeå University and an arena for collaboration with Sami partners and organizations. Vaartoe is building its research environment around four cross-disciplinary thematic areas:
• Health and living conditions
• Culture and history
• Land and water
• Language and education
The positions will be tied to one of these areas as a means to strengthen the research groups and develop Sami and Indigenous Research at Umeå University. The tasks consist mainly of own research. Teaching may also occur, up to 20% (according to the central agreement).The positions start on the 1st of April 2019.
Vaartoe is looking for applicants with PhD (or an equivalent foreign degree) in an area of relevance for the planned project. The degree must be completed no more than three years before the closing date of the application unless special circumstances exist.
Applicants must demonstrate documented independent research work and skills in writing scientific articles and reports in Swedish and/or English. Prior work in Sami and Indigenous research is considered a merit, as is a track record of research done in collaboration with Indigenous partners. Candidates who do not have a background in Indigenous research shall clearly describe how their background and previous research experiences are relevant to the planned project in Sami/ Indigenous research.
